2013 White Paper on the Life of Weeds (by Yoo Young-a)

White Paper on the Life of Weeds: No Longer a Stranger

Jeimin Kim has worked with "weeds" as his subject matter for more than 7 years, since 2005. He has projected himself on weeds, personified them and depicted their diverse ways in his solo exhibitions, Homage to the Weeds (2005), Botanopolis (2008), 24 Self-Defense Techniques for Weeds (2012), The Art of Vegetating (2013) and White Paper on the Life of Weeds. They mainly focused on how the weeds cultivated themselves and trained in order to defend themselves from and survive. The weeds' efforts for survival and appearances have gradually changed in time, and their relations with the outer world have also experienced change. In the beginning, weeds symbolizing an individual were depicted as confronting with or separated from the outer world in somewhat passive and weak gestures, but these plants gradually transformed into dynamic and active beings. Moreover, they started to pay attention to other weeds, and accept the outer environment.

The main theme of the early weed works from 2005 to 2008 is weeds cultivating their bodies at the gym. Here the weeds are shown as weak individuals in society. For example, in Weak Weed Cultivating Life Force (2005) and Working Out-Plant Power (2005), the weed is diligently exercising his muscle(?) strength on work-out machines. The weed is pulling on a handle attached to heavy weights to gain strength in his arms and legs. Anyone who has been to the gym can understand such positions. Building bodily strength is one of the basic, but less aggressive ways for one to protect himself from others. Meanwhile, Scallion Kung Fu Training (2008), in which the plant is jabbing his arms into a hot pot of noodles, is exceptionally aggressive. It resembles how the hero of the movie Drunken Master (1979) trains in martial arts by thrusting his hands in sand to harden them.

While the weeds' weight training was an expression of the individual, Gucci Lotus (2005), Prada Lantern Plant (2005) and Weak Weed Gaining Strength and Bystanders (2005) expressed relations with society. During this period, the artist's view of society is characterized by a passive cynicism. In the cases of works, which use patterns from luxury brands such as Gucci on Lotus leaves, or compare the fruits of the lantern plant to bags, the artist is on one hand, sarcastically exposing the psychology of people who fancy such luxury items through plants, and on the other hand, saying that the commonly found plants have fine value. Furthermore, as we can see in Weed Gaining Strength and Bystanders (2005), the individual represented by the weed and the other represented by the "bystanders" are by no means in a cooperative relationship. The distant bystanders merely observe the "weak" weed. Obviously, the weed is separated from his(her) surroundings.

But from 2010, the artist's views on the weed gradually began to change. He has started to pay attention to the positive side of the weed, and also to various other weeds. First, the positive activity of the weed, which appeared partially in 2008 as diverse martial art techniques were developed, came to the forefront in 2010. Various training techniques, which resemble those in a training textbook, appear in 24 Self-Defense Techniques for Weeds (2010). The weeds are still training for survival, but the focus has moved from body-building to self-defense. And unlike the distance with other weeds as in previous works, the weeds join forces with other weeds to resist outside oppression, as in "Struggle in Unity." In addition, they fiercely express their discontent through works like the "Fuck-You Gesture." In 2013 the number of self-defense techniques increases from 24 to 42, in 42 Self-Defense Techniques for Weeds (2013), and in Health Management Guide for Weeds (2013), the artist demonstrates an increasing intensity of health-maintaining from Taijiquan to dance sports.

Such upgraded self-discipline of the weed resulted in building self confidence and interest in other weeds. All works in the exhibition, White Paper on the Life of Weeds (2013), with the exception of Life as a Neobiota (2011), were made in 2013. In the work Life as a Neobiota, considering that an airplane can be seen outside the window, a weed is obviously about to travel somewhere on a flight, as he(she) pulls along his(her) suit case. Neobiota, a combination of "neo," meaning "new," and "biota," meaning "collection of organisms in a region," can pose a threat to indigenous species, as foreign organisms can disturb the local habitat. But in this work, the weed does not appear to be a threatening imposter, but rather a light-footed tourist going on a journey. While the weeds in formerly produced works appeared as beings alienated or isolated from their own society, the weed in this work is boldly claiming to be an outsider and setting off an a journey. It is going beyond the border and expanding its scope.

Another noteworthy work in this exhibition is The Personal Illustrated Guide to Plants in Europe (2010-2013). The work is based on a series drawings done by the artist from 2010, when he was staying in Austria for a few months, to 2013. 24 different plants are shown in the work. The artist introduces these weeds he discovered while travelling in Austria, United Kingdom and Germany according to the 5 categories of "name, taxonomical rank, habitat, origin and description." What is interesting is the explanations. The descriptions are fictitious, and trigger various imaginations about the plant and its surroundings by using play on words. They also may evoke nostalgia or other memories to those who are a similar age as the artist. For example, the favorite movie of Christopher, who originally came from a passing train, is Trainspotting (1996), and his favorite novel is Murder on the Orient Express. The artist's imagination jumps from place to place, following titles that include the word "train." This also evokes old memories within film buffs who were in college around 1996, when the movie was introduced in Korea. While recalling the popular film of those days, we can take glimpses of the times. The rebelling and wandering young character acted by Iwan Macgregor attracted the attention of people at the time. Moreover, I remember that when PC text communication was still popular, it was one of the most commonly cited films in the Movie Quiz online chatting rooms.

The artist's way of enabling viewers to feel sentiment of certain times can also be discovered in the plant named "Pamela." Living on the banks of the Elbe in Hamburg, Germany, and classified as "somewhere between the land and water" taxonomically, this plant likes the TV series Baywatch. The American series about life guards was aired from 1989 to 2001. The show made young and glamorous Pamela Anderson into a star, and perhaps gave the misconception to the public that all life guards were either girls with big breasts and slender bodies, or muscular guys with six-pack abs. Many male and female TV viewers were happy just to watch these actors. Spectators may find themselves loosing track of time in their imaginations just by looking at and reading these pictures and text in the Personal Illustrated Guide to Plants in Europe. And consequently, they will be empathizing and communicating with the artist without even coming face-to-face with him.

Thus, The Personal Illustrated Guide to Plants in Europe, created based on actual plants found by the artist in Europe, shows how the interest of the artist moved from a single weed to diverse plants. Furthermore, in terms of the artist's views on relations in society, with others, are not those of a stranger, as can be seen in I Call it Home (2013) and Squatters (2013). That is because he became the subject, the main character. Even if one looks different or has a different nationality, weeds living in the same era can coexist through mutual understanding and empathy. The titles of the works may give a certain nuance of giving up, but nevertheless show that the weeds no longer have to feel alienated or isolated from society. The artist is narrowing the distance, not by establishing relations placing others at a distance based on nationality or origin as bystanders or strangers, but bringing out sympathy of others by drawing the times. Yet, it is difficult to estimate how much closer the distance has become. The witty humor of the artist, which makes people laugh, actually requires a certain distance in order to endlessly contemplate on and draw the images of the time. That is, in the exhibition White Paper on the Life of Plants, the artist is showing the weeds who establish mutual relations in order to survive in society, regardless of their diverse appearances and nationalities. And he is reflecting his hope to coexist with other weeds living in the same era.
